After graduating from Swansea University in 1996, I spent 20 years working for BT. I worked in the finance function throughout that time, progressing from junior management accountant to CFO of BT Expedite and head of finance for BT Global Customer Service Operations. As a senior finance professional in this organisation I was responsible for +£500m budgets with +5,000 people on the direct payroll. More recently I spent 3 years with Colt Technologies, in a similar customer service head of finance role.
It was in a customer service role at BT that I recognised, clearly, that my main business motivation was to work with individual clients and SME businesses. I committed to build upon this clarity of thought and a long-held desire to run my own business to channel my passion for customer services and experience in finance towards a career change. Progress through the St. James’s Place Academy and the creation of Andrew Varley Financial Planning, an Associate Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is the culmination of that commitment. With my customer service operations background, clients will be at the very core of what I do, with the aim of providing our clients with financial peace of mind.
I have a life outside of business as well, of course. I live in the Cyncoed/Roath Park area of Cardiff with my wife Katie and three young daughters. Like many families, we are busy running around to various activities. We love it.
I have always played sport, particularly football and cricket. These days I am more likely to be found in the stands of the Principality Stadium, or on the golf course, or on a 5-a-side pitch, or following the fortunes of Aberystwyth Town FC in the league of Wales or coaching my daughters Under-7s football team.
