After graduating from Swansea University in 1996, I spent 20 years working for BT. I worked in the finance function throughout that time, progressing from junior management accountant to CFO of BT Expedite and head of finance for BT Global Customer Service Operations. As a senior finance professional in this organisation I was responsible for +£500m budgets with +5,000 people on the direct payroll. More recently I spent 3 years with Colt Technologies, in a similar customer service head of finance role.
It was in a customer service role at BT that I recognised, clearly, that my main business motivation was to work with individual clients and SME businesses. I committed to build upon this clarity of thought and a long-held desire to run my own business to channel my passion for customer services and experience in finance towards a career change. Progress through the St. James’s Place Academy and the creation of Andrew Varley Financial Planning, a Partner Practice of St. James’s Place Wealth Management, is the culmination of that commitment. With my customer service operations background, clients will be at the very core of what I do, with the aim of providing our clients with financial peace of mind.
I have a life outside of business as well, of course. I live in the Cyncoed/Roath Park area of Cardiff with my wife Katie and three young daughters. Like many families, we are busy running around to various activities. We love it.
I have always played sport, particularly football and cricket. These days I am more likely to be found in the stands of the Principality Stadium, or on the golf course, or on a 5-a-side pitch, or following the fortunes of Aberystwyth Town FC in the league of Wales or coaching my daughters Under-7s football team.
